Hotel Review : Kagi Resort and Spa Island, Maldives

Updated: May 28, 2022

This is a review of Kagi Resort and Spa Maldives. We try to extensively explain our stay at the resort. We booked a Water Villa with Lagoon view with All-Inclusive board. The resort is situated 60 minutes by boat from Male. Alternatively it's a 15 minutes sea plane flight. We chose the Seaplane flight as we wanted to experience it once and see the views. It does not seem to be faster or easier. Upon our arrival, after exiting the luggage reclaim a representative from Kagi was waiting for us and escorted us to the TMA Check in for our sea plane flight. After checking in our suitcase and we received our boarding passes we were bussed to the TMA terminal on the other side of the airport (10min drive). Our luggage were transported from the check-in immediately thus we didn't have to carry these.

At the TMA terminal you can wait in the Champa resorts lounge. In our case we waited 45min before they bussed us to the airplane.

The Lounge offers some drinks and small snacks while you're waiting for your flight

Toilets were located across the hall to freshen up.

We left on a short scenic flight before arriving at a platform in the middle of the sea. From there we disembarked and continued 5 minutes by boat to the Island.

Kagi does not have a Seaplane dock connected to the island immediately.

On Arrival they greet you with a drum before proceeding to the reception. Our room was ready already thus we enjoyed an extremely early (free) check-in at 8am.

Our villa was 215. Located on the East side, it is the last villa facing the east-south side. The villas are lovely, they are relatively new and well decorated.

Some of the amenities

The view is somehow a little obstructed by the sea walls if you're looking for clear sea view only the ocean view villas on the west side have this option Our villa was very quiet and because the sea current came from the north west it was shielded from the waves and thus way quieter and easier to swim on our side of the island. The snorkling is nicer on this side too just behind the wave breakers there are nice corals and a dramatic drop after it. A nice spot to snorkle is also in front of the buffet restaurant. We ate at the buffet and ke un restaurant. Breakfast buffet slightly changed also every morning. Dinner Buffet was thematic and changed every evening. Both buffets weren't extensive. About 6 hot dishes are offered and then on top you can order waffles, pancakes to made for you. Similarly in the evening you could order extra dishes made for you on top. Of the few options provided in the buffet. The deserts were plenty and really good. For lunch it was a la carte daily.

Breakfast

For Lunch there is only A La Carte

Should you be interested what the menu looks like you can download the Kagi Application from your appstore, you do not need to be staying in the hotel to view the menu

In the evening there was mostly buffet, some were Theme-Buffets like Maldivian night

The ke un restaurant offers only a la carte but the quality is a little better than the buffet restaurant. It is not open every day and alternates with the Italian restaurant.

The Menu can again be found on the Kagi App if you want to check it before your stay.

There is little entertainment for guests it's really a quiet resort, on 2 evenings there was some entertainment only.

The hotel offers an extensive spa

At Kagi Spa

You can off course book tours and snorkeling / diving excursions. Also for all inclusive guests there is a free 1:30h evening cruise which for us was really lovely, we saw plenty of dolphins! They provide some snacks and drinks also during the trip.

Sunset Cruise

You can find a full Island walk below

For departure we were lucky again as we checked out late at 2pm for our evening flight. We waited about one hour in the departure lounge as our flight was delayed, they offered us to sit at the bar but we preferred the A/C lounge which offers drink and toilets/shower also.

The same journey on the way back as we came we were transported to the platform 5 minutes away from the hotel and then flew to Male. On arrival a Kagi representative waited for us near the Seaplane and escorted us to the bus to the international terminal. Once we arrived there someone should have been there to wait for us but he was late so we collected our own suitcases until he then showed up and escorted us to the departure area. We had to wait almost one hour to check-in still. The departures of Male are really busy and not airconditioned until you reach checkin area after the first security thus not very pleasant! The Kagi resort is a great hotel to stay. The villas are excellent, the staff fantastic. Also nice to to see the manager alot around the hotel, talking with guests and staff. He seemed to care about the staff which is unusual as many resorts treat their staff more like slaves. The positive - New resort, beautiful villas, outdoor and indoor bathrooms. - Great staff - The Reef is nice - Close to Male - All inclusive has a nice offer (excludes room service though) - Lots of extras such a turn down service with chocolates. Free champagne and fruit on arrival. Early/late check out. - Different beaches, some shielded by wave breakers thus safe to swim even when windy. - Small more private resort - Spa was good and enough availability of staff The Negatives - Food quality could be improved. - If an unrestricted view is preferred then sea villas on the 2xx east side are not for you. - Curtains are black out but a bit short and sunlight will light up room from bathroom side also thus the rooms is relatively bright in the morning. - The Seaplane is a bit of a hassle, everything is perfectly arranged and we didn't loose any time but you have to bus, plane and boat still. I would recommend to go by boat. You'll reach the hotel faster than by plane I think. - Not so much landscaping on the island it is mostly sand. It's reclaimed land.
